This fabric was originally made to be used as uniform fabric for soldiers in armies of France and UK but caught the imagination of the people in the US and soon became so popular that leading readymade companies introduced their brands of chinos for both men as well as women. The word chino means roasted and is a reflection of the fact that chinos are mostly seen in brown or skin color though today one can find chinos in many other colors too.
